The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yui has the meaning to bind and is often interpreted as "union".

Patanajali an Indian sage brought the practice of Yoga into the Yoga Sutras about 2000 years ago. The sutras exists of 195 statements that is used as a philosophical guideline for most of the yoga that is practiced today. It also describes eight limbs of yoga: the yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asanas (postures), pranyama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawl of senses), dharana (concentration), dyana (meditation), samadhi (absorbtion).
While we as yogis discover these eight limbs, we start with adapting our behaviour in the world around us and then we focus inwardly to walk our path towards liberation.

Today most people who start to practice yoga are engaged in the third limb, the asana, which is a program of physical postures in order to gain physical strength and prerequisites required for long meditations.
